IG Factbook: "A grouping consisting of: Benin, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey, a West African kingdom that rose to prominence in about 1600 and became a regional power. Ghana in 1957 became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to gain its independence. Guinea gained its independence from France in 1958. Mali, Mauritania, Togo and Niger all became independent of France in 1960. Nigeria is a major oil producer but the income has been squandered through corruption and mismanagement. Senegal was ruled by a Socialist Party for 40 years until 2000. In December 1999, a military coup in Cote d'Ivoire overthrew the government. In Sierra Leone democracy is slowly being re-established after a brutal civil war from 1991 to 2002."
