The Pandemic series comprises 4 browser-based Flash games and one mobile port which mostly predate and are spiritual predecessors to Plague Inc.

  1. Pandemic (also known as Pandemic 1)
  2. Pandemic: Extinction of Man
  3. Pandemic II (the most well known, released in July 2008)
  4. Pandemic: American Swine (released in July 2009)
  5. Pandemic 2.5 (an iPhone/Android remake of Pandemic II, released in 2011)

Similarities and differences to Plague Inc

General

Like Plague Inc, players can choose Bacteria, Virus, or Parasite as their plague type, although different names are used for stats.

The Cure (called the Vaccine in all Pandemic games) also instantly cures all infected, instead of rapidly reducing the infected count. This gives the player no time to stop the vaccine after it's deployed. There are also fewer countries along with fewer choices of symptoms, and players cannot pick their starting country. Instead, it's chosen randomly. However, the vaccine can also be made useless by evolving adequate drug resistance.

Even the lowest difficulty presents the danger/possibility of detection even if the disease is asymptomatic, making it even harder to play than Plague Inc, as the "lay low, then evolve symptoms" strategy doesn't work.

Evolution points (also known as DNA points) are needed to unlock the next tier of traits, and there's also the possibility of symptoms mutating as soon as the next tier is unlocked, necessitating a very careful game strategy. In Pandemic, there are water plants that can be infected, which will increase infectivity on the country they are in once they are infected.

List of Pandemic titles

Pandemic I

The first instalment in the series, known retrospectively as Pandemic 1/Pandemic I. The game was sponsored by Crazy Monkey Games and was first published on their website.

There is a hard time limit of 200 days before a cure is developed.

This game is based in days that you have to skip instead of natural days, causing different changes. There are 9 Countries, some of them with airports and water plants: North America (All of North America starting in Panama and Iceland), South America, West Europe (Most of Europe), Central Europe (Has parts of western Asia and the Middle East), East Europe (Has a bit of China, Indian Peninsula), Asia (the rest of Asia), Africa and South Pacific. In this game you get points to evolve symptoms and Transmissions. There is no explaining, but only the name. Also, you have a Threath level that goes from Germ to Pandemic

Pandemic 1 Disease

The Disease screen in Pandemic I

Pandemic: Extinction of Man

In this game, you also have the skipping days feature. You have simple controls: You get point that do actions in a country: Infect a new one, spread the disease, infect airports, waterplants and reduce the cure, along with your disease lethality, infectivity and drug resistance. This game adds a new feature: The Cure, every country has a cure meter which increases over time, this will make that country immune. The countries are: Canada (has Alaska), USA (Has Mexico and central America), Greenland (Has some Canada islands), South America, Europe, Russia, Middle East, Asia, South Pacific and Africa.

Pandemic II

This is the game that most resembles Plague, Inc., and the most popular Pandemic instalment. It was released on 14 July 2008, and published by Crazy Monkey Games.

Changes to the game's mechanics include:

  • The Breaking News ticker now shows several headlines at once.
  • Gameplay under a new "Relaxed" difficulty mode takes less time to complete and doesn't require as much in-depth strategy. Not all plague traits are available, though.
  • Days now advance naturally in Pandemic II; speeding up the game's pace is also possible.
  • Plague stats (i.e. lethality, infectivity, visibility) are now represented by bars instead of numbers.
  • All transmission traits (i.e. heat/moisture resistance, airborne/waterborne transmissions) are now available in 4 steps.
    • Cold resistance, drug resistance, and insect transmission traits have been added. The incubation period, survivability outside host, and bodily fluids traits have been removed.
  • Plague and transmission traits (i.e. the symptoms and how the plague's transmitted) are now accompanied by a brief description explaining their infectivity, lethality, and visibility.
  • Plague traits are now divided into four tiers, which must be unlocked using Evolution Points first.
    • The Organ Failure trait has been expanded into Hypersensitivity, Kidney Failure, and Heart Failure traits.
    • The Boils, Necrosis, Swelling, and Anticoagulant traits have been removed.
  • Additional random attributes that can affect gameplay may pop up at the beginning of a game, or sometimes in the middle of one. Examples include:
    • The Apocalyptic attribute (usually seen in the middle of a game) leads to increased plague visibility.
    • The Expected attribute, which is enabled at the beginning of a new game. Plague visibility and vaccine development speed are increased.

Madagascar and Greenland

Pandemic II's Madagascar is infamous for being the hardest country to infect, with plagues often barely scraping into the country before its borders close, or oftentimes just never getting infected and ruining an otherwise perfect game. Some may consider it as the equivalent of Greenland in Plague Inc. Both countries are present in both games, and Madagascar still gives players much trouble.

Madagascar's legendary difficulty led to a popular internet meme called "Shut Down Everything" which depicts the president of Madagascar being informed that someone elsewhere has a minor symptom (such as a cough) and he yells this phrase and shuts the shipyards. This has even been referenced in Plague Inc. itself in the form of the Shut Down Everything scenario, especially with one of the achievements associated with it, Mr President.

Greenland is also notorious for its tendency to keep its hospitals open as long as possible. Due to a bug, its hospitals sometimes remain active and contribute to vaccine research even when the country has been wiped out.

Pandemic: American Swine

The game was released amidst the 2009-10 swine flu pandemic, thus far the only game in the series with such unfortunate honour. sponsored by Kongregate.

Unlike previous instalments, the game's objective is to control a swine flu outbreak (rather than propagating one), as the government, happening within the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii).

Changes include:

  • The difficulty options have been expanded and refined.
  • The game also adds a Panic meter, which can be incited or de-escalated by the media, and accordingly increases/decreases the costs of actions and tax revenue. The game is lost instantly at 100% Panic.
  • Defeat also occurs when 50% or more of the population have died.
  • The cost of enacting measures is now measured in dollars, rather than points.

Outbreak control measures include:

  • Military support, curfews, mask distribution, and vaccine disbursal (available only when a vaccine is ready).
  • Cities can be quarantined (locked down) to prevent entry/exit, at a recurring cost.
  • Domestic and foreign tourism (through seaports and airports) can be banned.
  • There're options for neutron or nuclear bombing a city out of existence as a last resort.

Deport: Prevents foreign infections, but increases the PANIC.

Develop Vaccine: It starts instantly in a new game, and along with money it requires open hospitals

Info Campaign: only avaible in Open Government

Extreme Police: only avaible in Closed Government

Military Support: Decreases PANIC and infection rates.

Curfews: Decreases PANIC and infection rates.

Hang out masks: Decreases infection rates (Only if state is infected).

Vaccine: Only if vaccine is ready, people will become inmune slowly.

Road Block: Prevents some travel between states

Barricade: Prevents any travel between states

Censor: Media is unnalowed to make news

Spin: Media impacts less in PANIC

Solicit Fear: Increases PANIC

Military Support: Decreases PANIC

Domestic tourism (toggle): unnalows people to go from and to other states

Foreign Tourism (toggle): Unnalows people from other countries to enter and exit the USA

Close (toggle): Closes/Opens both tourisms

Military Support: Decreases PANIC

Close (Toggle): Closes/Open the hospital, reduces infections but also reduces vaccine research speed

Quarantine: Unnalows to enter or exit the city, but increases PANIC.

Neutron Strike: Kills everyone in a city.

Nuclear Strike: Dissapears the city and kills everyone in it.

close (toggle): Unnalows to exit/enter from the selected border.

This game also has trophies:

Complete the game on normal difficulty

Complete the game on Hard difficulty

Complete the game on Hard difficulty with every government type

Complete the game on Extreme difficulty

Pandemic 2.5

Strictly not a port of Pandemic II, as the graphics were reworked and additional stats were added. Because it's not been updated in a while, the app is not visible/downloadable in the App Store to players with iPhones on iOS 11 and above.

Trivia

Pandemic II

  • In this game, if a seaport is locked, a boat cannot dock. Therefore, sometimes there will be a boat stuck in the ocean due to all seaports being locked down.
  • It is also possible for a disease to become completely immune to Vaccine attempts.
  • The game's music was composed by electronica and house musician Evgueni Naverniouk. This comprises three tracks: Fragile Existence (the title screen theme) and two versions of Evacuation (the soundtrack during gameplay). Only the Heavy version of Evacuation, which has additional percussion, is heard in-game.
  • The drum sample heard in both Evacuation mixes is a stock effect heard in many other game/TV show soundtracks and music pieces. Well-known examples include Underworld's Ring Road and a brief excerpt in an episode of Family Guy.

Pandemic: American Swine

  • Evgueni Naverniouk is no longer the sole composer. He also worked on sound effects, rather than the soundtrack, which was composed by two musicians new to the series.
