Catalytic Switch is a gene available for the standard plagues, in addition to the Neurax Worm, Virus Necroa and Simian Flu DLCs. It is similar to the Cytochrome Surge and Metabolic Jump genes. This gene allows to obtain DNA points by popping the blue bubbles.

- According to the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, it is recommended to use this gene for the genetic code of Bacteria, Virus, Fungus, Prion and Bio-Weapon plagues.[1] The Indian technology magazine Digit recommends using this gene in plagues that are easily detected and therefore the cure starts faster, because of this it is necessary to obtain more DNA points through the blue bubbles.[2]
- This gene can be used to earn extra DNA for a long term game, which will give a slightly higher score for the main Nano Virus games, as when a country starts leading the cure and blue bubbles start appearing they will not affect the research allocation for Nano Virus, although, the government order modifications will still apply.[Note 1]
- This gene is one of the most important to obtain the Plague in Space & Nuclear Retaliation achievements, because the player will need the extra DNA from the blue bubbles to evolve the traits required for the events.[3]

- ↑ Government order actions refer to actions caused by events that happen in the game, they indicate when a country leading the cure sends blue planes to other parts of the world, when a blue plane lands in another country a blue bubble is appears.
